Chateau de Montreuil Bellay - Vallée de la Loire
Poursuivez votre séjour - Promenade en ville

Continue your visit of the château with a walk around the walled town ...

Why not take a relaxing walk through the streets of Montreuil-Bellay, surrounded by its impressive fortified walls. This town is recognized as “one of the most beautiful places to visit in France” (Have a look on the maps of the websites www.viamichelin.com or www.mappy.com).

Place du Marché (Market Square contains some magnificent old houses such as la Maison de l’Apothicaire, which was built in the fifteenth century and la Maison des Remparts, built in the eleventh century.

Wander down the narrow little streets which bring you to Rue du Docteur Gaudrez  where you can see, if you take a peek through the gate, the Hoetel de Chatillon and the Gaudrez Close, the Maison Aubelle and Hotel Sestier de Champrobert. Close by are also les Grands Augustins, the chapel of les Petits Augustins and its botanical gardens.

Take the main road, in the direction of Touars and you will come upon la Porte Saint-Jean in between two towers. Further on, you will come to la Porte Nouvelle.

Go down and take a stroll by the banks of the Thouet, and try to imagine how things were in years gone by. Try to see in your mind’s eye, the cloister of Nobis, the apse of the church of Saint Pierre and the gardens of the old priory. Drive on then to the port of Saint Catherine where the boats were abandoned. Take a photo of the château with its reflection in the river.
